How to Fix My Internet Connection - Part 1

This is the part 1 of How to Fix My Internet Connection. This is a No Sync No Surf scenario.

What is SYNC?

Sync is a term used to describe the communication between your computer or any home networking devices and your Internet Service Provider who provides you DSL Signal.
When you are experiencing no sync issue, it simply means:

·         You can’t connect to the internet.
·         You are not getting DSL signal from your internet service provider.
·         Broadband or DSL light in your modem is solid red, flashing green or flashing red.
·         Cables (DSL cable) connected to your wall or phone jack from your modem or router are damaged and are not working properly.
·         Your phone line is not filtered properly or there is something wrong with your phone.
o   If you don’t have a landline or home phone, your DSL cable should not be filtered.
·         Filter is damaged.
·         Possible Electromagnetic Interference or Radio Frequency Interference.
·         There is a problem within your ISP’s network or what they call “outage”.
·          You already have defective a modem.

SOLUTIONS:
Basing from the causes stated above, we will have a clue on how to fix this kind of issue. Steps would be very simple, though the issue is very frustrating we still really need to be patient.

 ============================================================
DISCLAIMER: The following troubleshooting steps are mainly basic but are based on what I’ve learned. I will not be held responsible for any loss or damage that has been made through following these steps.
=============================================================
A.  Check any possible damages in your cables or cords connected to your devices.
·         DSL cables are lines where DSL signal from your ISP would pass through that why we should perform this step unless you are connected to the internet wirelessly, then that would be another issue.
·         Try to unplug and replug your cables or try switching other ends.
·         You could also use other cables if you have one to verify this issue.

B.  If you have landline service, make sure your home phone is working fine and is filtered because it might interfere the DSL signal passing through from the phone lines outside toward the lines inside your home.

§  Phone signal and DSL signal is passing through the same line.
§  Phone should be filtered using what they call a filter or splitter. It mainly filters phone signal so you can use your phone and internet at the same time, in short there will be no interference on both devices.
§  Remember that if you don’t have a phone service, DSL cable you should not connect this to a filter because filter is used mainly to BLOCK PHONE SIGNAL that would possibly pass through your DSL cable.

C.  Sometimes, aside from our home phone, we also have devices like fax machines, radio, TV, microwave oven etc. that might cause Electromagnetic Interference or Radio Frequency Interference (EMI/RFI).

·         Let’s try to identify some devices we have that might cause these interference and check if it’s too near to our modem or computer. If yes, try to place these devices away from our modem or if the device should be filtered, then use a filter.

D.  It is also possible that your filter is the one not working properly. If your filter is too old, it is possible that it’s already defective. If you have other filter at home, try using it and check if this will resolve the issue.

E.  Now, if you have checked and performed all the steps above and the issue is still not yet resolved, try to verify if there is an existing outage in your area. Verify that by asking your neighbor if they are experiencing the same issue or by calling your ISP’s customer service.

F.  If there is no outage, try to hard reset and power cycle your modem.

§  Reset modem is found at the back of your modem. Push the small switch using a thin stick or ballpen for one minute then check if there will be changes on the light after two minutes.
§  Power cycle the modem by unplugging and replugging the power adapter to your power outlet. Wait for some changes on the status lights as well.
§  If doing these two steps and the status lights of in your modem is still flashing green or red or solid red, then the problem would probably the modem itself.
§  To resolve this issue is to buy a new one. If your modem is still within warranty then it’s a good news but if not you will spend 100 box for it.

G.  If you are sure or if you have the instinct that the problem is not your modem, possible reason for this are the lines outside your home. A technician visit will be the solution for this issue.

Hope it helps!!! Have a great day!!!
